While there are so many things to worry about the states, Lagos remains a popular choice of destination due to it economic viability, lifestyle and entertainment for sure. In recent years, the city of Lagos has witnessed the rise of Tech Hubs, Investors and settlement of those companies on the mainland part of Lagos.

It’s no news that places on the Lagos Island like Ikoyi, Victoria Island, and Lekki are the most sought-after places in Lagos still, the Mainland is home to many has it offers more affordability for an average Lagosian.

Below are some of the best places you can live in Lagos Mainland.

IKEJA

The state capital of Lagos State. Is a well planned, clean and quiet area accommodating residential and commercial buildings with shopping malls, pharmacies, and government reservation areas. Ikeja host Murtala Mohammed International Airport, boasts a number of shopping malls, like the Ikeja City Mall.

Ikeja is considered one of the best places to live on the Lagos Mainland. Being the capital of the state, it offers the perfect Lagos experience – its bustle and hustle lifestyle. Also considered one of the busiest places in Lagos, due to the number of activities in the area.

Some of the popular areas in Ikeja include Opebi, Toyin Street, Allen Avenue, Agidingbi, Oba Akran, Ikeja GRA, Obafemi Awolowo Way, Adeniyi Jones, Unity Road, Otigba Street, Mobolaji Bank among others.

YABA

Yaba is a suburb located in Lagos Mainland LGA. It is one of the most popular areas in Lagos. Famous for its business, and Tech activities and is home to the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital Yaba (FNHY). 

Another interesting thing about Yaba is that it also serves as a link between the Lagos Mainland and the Lagos Island. That is, you can always connect to the Lagos Island from Yaba through the third mainland – the second longest bridge in Africa.

Yaba is considered one of the best places to live in because of the opportunities that it poses. It is conducive for all age groups. However, due to the number of higher institutions in the area, the area is populated with students. It is also one the perfect places for singles to live in Lagos.

There are many institutions of higher learning in the area like Queen’s College, the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, the Yaba College of Technology, Igbobi College, the University of Lagos, the Federal School Science and Technical College, and the Federal College of Education. Yaba has one of the busiest market sites in Lagos, known as Tejuosho Market, Nigeria.

SURULERE

Surulere is a residential and commercial Local Government Area located on the Lagos Mainland. It is home to the Lagos National Stadium (capacity 60,000) built in 1972 for the All-Africa Games. One of the most popular places in Surulere is Ojuelegba.

Like most places in Lagos, Surulere has its fair share of the traffic jam. The roads are usually busy during peak hours. Also, there is a considerable number of things to do in Surulere, which include a shopping mall, a cinema amongst other.

Some of the popular areas in Surulere include Shitta, Ojuelegba, Stadium, Itire-Ikate, Ijesha, Lawanson, Ogunlana Drive, Adeniran Ogunsanya, Masha, Kilo etc.

AGEGE

Another nice residential area on the Mainland that you can reside. Its a close proximity with Ogba and Ikeja. If you are looking to experience the Lagos lifestyle first hand, Agege is the go-to place. 

Agege host the NYSC permanent orientation camp located at Iyana-Ipaja Road, Agege. Agege boasts of very few industries. Residents of the area enjoy transportation given its railway. There are a number of affordable houses for rent in Agege.

OGBA

Ogba, is five kilometers west of Ikeja. A densely populated area with a mix of housing for high and low-income earners. Rents at the top end are lower than in Allen Avenue and Omole Estates. Ogba is located at the heart of Lagos metropolis and is therefore easily accessible by bus and taxis. The area is a peaceful residential community, it is also an industrial area.

MARYLAND

Considered as one of the best residential and commercial area. This part of Lagos is also in close proximity to the state’s capital – Ikeja. The area is quiet when compared to other places in Lagos.

The entire area has a good road network with few companies on both sides of the road. Another reason you should consider Maryland as your next destination is because of its good electricity supply. The Maryland Mall is regarded as one of the biggest in Lagos state. There are also a number of estates in the area like the Shonibare Estate, Mende, Maryland Estate, G. Cappa, Onigbongbo Estate etc.

APAPA

Happens to be one of Lagos LGAs, The region of Apapa lies near the mouth of Lagos lagoon and contains ports and terminals for various commodities. It also houses some refineries like the BUA Group

Other notable buildings include the Folawiyo Towers. Apapa houses the headquarters of the Nigerian newspaper, This day, and also has an amusement parks kids would love.

Though Apapa is more of a commercial area, it is host to a considerable number of residential apartments. That said, there are certain things to be considered when choosing this place as a residential area. It is much more advisable if you plan to live and work in the area because of daily gridlocks due to bad roads, and trucks.

Festac

Festac Town is a federal housing estate located along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway in Lagos State, Nigeria. Its name is derived from the acronym FESTAC, which stands for Second World African Festival of Arts and Culture that was held there in 1977.

The Nigerian government invested substantial amounts and resources into building Festac Town, which has state of the art electrical generators, police and fire stations, access to public transportation, supermarkets, banks, health centres, public restrooms, and postal services.

Festac is on a different class of its own when you compare the place with other areas in Lagos Mainland. It is one place in Lagos that is full of history and culture. Over years, Festac has become a haven for all classes of people. That is, there is no distinct difference between the high-class, middle-class and lower class. Some of the popular places in Festac include 23 Road, 512 Road, 401, 712, and 22 Road.

IYANA IPAJA

Another popular area in Lagos, and not surprising to be one of the most populated area in Lagos Island. Iyana Ipaja is a Yoruba word that literally translates as “the road that has branched off to Ipaja town”. The area now known as Iyana Ipaja was historically inhabited by the Mosakus, Alaagbas, Okis and the Alaguntans.

Iyana Ipaja is in the Alimosho Local government of Lagos State. Other areas around Iyana Ipaja are Abule Egba, Akowonjo, Agege, Egbeda, and Ikeja.

The majority of the residents here are low and middle-class income earners. Transportation to this part of the Lagos Mainland in mainly by buses or train. The cost of living is relatively cheap too. 

MAGODO

Magodo is a place in Kosofe Local Government Area, Lagos. It lies toward the outskirts of Lagos in close proximity to Ikeja and Ojodu Berger. Magodo is basically a residential area that is known to be home to some affluent people in the society.

With a close proximity to Ketu Market where all kinds of fresh foods and ingredients can be bought, also to the Ikeja City Mall, located close to the area, creating an avenue for people to catch some fun.

It is definitely one of the best places to live on the Lagos Mainland. Living here means you are close to some of the city’s top recreational centres. You are also close the outskirt of Lagos. However, one turn off aside from the usual traffic jam at peak hours.
