The Ikeja Bomb Blast and Real Estate Business in Oke-Afa

This story is mixed with pain and laughter. The truth is, I don’t know what disposition to have towards it. I sympathize with those who lost their loved ones in the 2002 Ikeja bomb blast. Over one thousand people perished in the Oke-Afa canal concealed by water hyacinth while attempting to escape the uncertain calamity. Worse still, till date, a lot of bodies remain undiscovered.

The memory of the event lingers in my brain. I get the flashback of this incident that occurred when I was in Primary 5 as if it happened yesterday. I can still remember praying with some of my friends, to ask for God’s mercy because I thought the end of the world which I have always heard of has come. I can remember the kind of fear, the pain, and confusion that I saw on everyone’s face that day.

Her Landlady was not moved, she was just going about her normal routine. Interestingly, the woman went inside her three bedroom flat, brought out a big bowl of eba, and started eating. She told my aunt that if she was going to die that death should at least meet the food in her tummy. She was relaxed, resting her back on the chair as she joyfully eats her eba.

I have learned a lot from this woman’s disposition to things. The fact that most people were in terror has made them meet with their untimely death. Today, Mama Lugho is late, but she died a peaceful death, as she anticipated. Anytime I remember the Ikeja bomb blast, I can’t help but remember “Mama Lugho”. Her memory lingers on. The Ikeja bomb blast has long been forgotten and real Estate in Oke-Afa is now considered as good business.
