Ikorodu, Lagos State

Ikorodu is situated in Southwest Nigeria. It is located in the nation’s biggest metropolitan region, Lagos state. Ikorodu is located at the northeastern part of Lagos State. This part of Lagos is flanked by the Lagos Lagoon and is bounded to the north by Ogun State.

History of Ikorodu

The rich history of Ikorodu reveals that the area was named by settlers of the Yoruba tribe who found the plateau and made it their home. The name Ikorodu was gotten from the word Oko Odu which translates to Odu farm. At the time, Ikorodu was called Okorodu. The Odu (which is no longer in existence), was a crop type which grew abundantly. These early settlers used the vegetable species to dye clothes among other things.

It is often said that the early settlers in Ikorodu were descendants of the Remo stock as most males among them had tribal marks similar to that found among the Remo. Some of the first settlers of Ikorodu were the sons of Akarigbo which included Koyelu of Orile Offin Shagamu-Oga,  Anoko, Lasuwon, Osonusi, Otutubiosun, Oladepo, Igimisoje and others.

However, after a while, these early settlers were joined by a group of Benin people led by a powerful man known as  Eregbouwa who is now referred to as Rebugbawa in Ikorodu. They were from the royal family of Oliha in Benin.

Ikorodu at the time was mostly used for farming and hunting. Up till today, there are lots of farmlands for sale in Ikorodu. The area was divided into three which include Isele, Ijomu and Aga. However, there was also a smaller division called Ituns which is absorbed under the larger ones.
