Tips for Installing a Pool in Your Home

Pools are constructed to serve various purposes. There are private pools, exercise pools, public pools, children’s pools, competition pools, and so on. Here, we will be considering pools installed at home.

Basically, pools can be built into the ground (in-ground pools) or built above ground (freestanding construction)

Before installing a pool, these are some of the factors  you should consider:

Contents

Location

The positioning of a pool is very important and should be well considered. Is the pool going to be indoor or outdoor? One of the advantages of having an indoor pool is that it is readily available year-round. You don’t have to worry about weather conditions before using it. Being indoors also means that the pool maintenance is less expensive. Outdoor pools, however, offer the fun of swimming under the sun. Also, because there is likely more space outside than inside, you can be more creative in the development process of the pool. Just ensure it close to the house (that is, private). It is also important to check the soil type first. Some soil types do not favour pool construction.

Who will be using it?

A pool designed for children should be shallow. To accommodate swimmers of all ages and allow for different activities, there might be demarcations – shallow areas for kids. You might also include extra rails to support elderly people while in the pool.

Features

To fully enjoy your pool, even when you’re not swimming, you can incorporate water features and lighting. You may also want to consider underwater benches, areas to play water volleyball or basketball, outdoor shower, children’s play equipment, and so on.

Pool Construction Material

There are three major options:

  • Vinyl: Vinyl is budget friendly, and the maintenance is low
  • Concrete: If you want a large pool, then a concrete pool is the best. You can customise them and they are extremely durable. You need not worry about the lining getting damaged. They are fully constructed on-site using a combination of concrete, steel, and plaster. Concrete pools have the longest duration of all swimming pool construction. In-ground pools are usually constructed from concrete.
  • Fiberglass: Fiberglass swimming pools are made in a variety of shapes and sizes and are going to fulfill most of your desired qualities. They are low maintenance, durable and compatible.

Additionally, stones and rocks can help a pool blend into a natural landscape, whereas glass might offer a home an urban look.

Pool Shape

A major factor to consider is the architecture of the house. You might want a heart-shaped pool for instance, but it might not be the best for your home. Circular and oval pools with water features and fountains are no longer in vogue now. But who says you have to follow what’s trending?

Pool Depth

This is very important, especially if you have children at home. You should determine how deep you want your pool.

Pool Heating

You do not want to swim in a cold pool, especially during Harmattan season. You may need to get a water heater to make the water comfortable for swimming.

Pool Lighting

Lighting not only does the obvious work of lighting up a place, it also beautifies it. Lighting transforms a swimming pool into a vibrant, striking setting. There are two options for lighting your pool: traditional incandescent globes or LED globes. The latter is usually recommended because it has a variety of colours. They also take up less electricity hence reducing costs. When installing, ensure that the positioning of your lights will give the best effect, that is, the lights reach all parts of the pool. You also need to take into consideration the colour of your pool finish, in order to ensure you choose the LED option that is best.
